Nigerian artist Akindele John harbors a profound respect for individuals of the African Diaspora, which he exemplifies in his vivid, celebratory portraiture. Working in oil on canvas, the artist facilities on figures who supply perception into diasporic lineages, as he intertwines historic components with that of the current day. “My topics are primarily based on African outdated methods,” he tells Colossal. “They’re actual folks that inform a narrative concerning the African diaspora.”
Usually overlaid with ornate botanical motifs or embedded with patterns, the portraits are vibrant and regal and have a tendency to painting figures in moments of contemplation. Yellow halos encircle their faces, elevating every to a place of religious knowledge and regard. John shares that he’s drawn to the contrasts inside compositions and up to date interpretations of chiaroscuro, notably the work of photographer Maria Presser.
