Nigerian artist Akindele John harbors a profound respect for individuals of the African Diaspora, which he exemplifies in his vivid, celebratory portraiture. Working in oil on canvas, the artist facilities on figures who supply perception into diasporic lineages, as he intertwines historic components with that of the current day. “My topics are primarily based on African outdated methods,” he tells Colossal. “They’re actual folks that inform a narrative concerning the African diaspora.”

Usually overlaid with ornate botanical motifs or embedded with patterns, the portraits are vibrant and regal and have a tendency to painting figures in moments of contemplation.
